Designer Portrait: Michael Kors! Here's How He Became A Billionaire!

Updated: Nov 21, 2020

Michael Kors manages to perfectly combine high street fashion and the commercial success of his accessories. Born on August 9, 1959, in Long Island, under the name Karl Anderson Jr., the designer changed his name when he was five when his mother remarried businessman Bill Kors. In 1970, he moved to New York to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology but dropped out after three semesters.

In 1978, Micheal Kors joined the Lothar boutique, which allowed him to create and sell his first clothing collection. The wave of enthusiasm among fashion consumers allowed Michael Kors to launch his own clothing line. Thus, in 1981 the Michael Kors Women's Collection was launched and sold in the Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue stores. His clothes, simple and elegant, doubled by his ability and charm to sell proved to be the winning combination. Kors has traveled throughout the United States to host fashion shows in private homes called "trunk shows." At the age of 23, the designer convinced Anna Wintour to see her collection, at that time on display in her own apartment.

In 1990, the designer was forced to reorganize his company and launched KORS Michael Kors, a clothing line accessible to the general public. At the same time, she became the creative director of the Celine fashion house, and in 2003 she won the Designer of the Year award from the Fashion Designers of America Council. A year later, he was asked to become a member of the jury for the Project Runway show, which he initially intended to turn down.

He has been nominated several times for Emmy Awards and has gained fame among international stars. Michelle Obama herself, the first lady of the United States of America, is a fan of the designer, and Heidi Klum, Zoe Saldana, Oprah, Jessica Alba are just some of the Hollywood stars who have developed a real "obsession" with the bags she created.

From intensely colored shoulder bags to large and roomy bags in wearable shades, these feminine accessories "go" alone on the streets of the American continent. What is their secret? Designer Michael Kors himself reveals to us: “Bags do not take into account age or figure. If you have a day when you don't feel good about yourself and the way you look, nothing prevents you from still wearing a quality purse ".

In the spring of this year, Michael Kors became a billionaire by increasing the stock market listing of the company that bears his name by 20%, thus joining the billionaires in the fashion world, such as Giorgio Armani, Miuccia Prada, Ralph Lauren, the owners of Hermes and Chanel.
